A Betrayal of Renew Hope Agenda: Nurses' Union Slams Govt Over Allowance Review.

Image
Abuja - The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives-Federal Health Institution (NANNM-FHI) Sector has expressed strong disappointment and disillusionment over the recent review of allowances for nurses. The union claims the new provisions are inadequate and fail to address the key concerns and welfare needs of its members. According to the union, the current allowances for shift duties, including night shifts and weekend shifts, are grossly insufficient. The union also expressed concern over the inadequacy of call duty allowances, noting that nurses on call often have to sacrifice their personal time and be available to respond to emergencies at any moment. The union is also demanding specialty allowances for nurses in specialized fields, including psychiatric nurses, critical care nurses, and pediatric nurses, among others. "We believe that a fair and equitable allowance structure for nurses will boost morale, productivity, and cushion the effect of Japa syndrome,...

Kaduna Nurse's Strike: Let this be a Turning Point

Image
Fellow healthcare workers, patients, and members of the public,       We started the ongoing strike not only as healthcare professionals but as individuals facing a great struggle and today is day 9 of the strike action. For too long, we have worked under conditions that test our strength—physically, mentally, and emotionally. I stand here, as a nurse in pain, not just from the long hours on my feet or the stress of handling the lives of others, but from the deep frustration that our cries for justice and fairness continue to be ignored.       We are the backbone of healthcare. We are the hands that care for the weak, the voices that calm the anxious, and the hearts that work tirelessly to heal the sick. Yet, we are treated as if we are invisible. The situation at General Hospital in Kafanchan reflects a much larger problem that affects hospitals across Kaduna State, and indeed the country. How can we continue to provide care when we ourselves are not cared...

Nigeria's Symphony Orchestra of Violence

Image
Like a wild virus spreading from the Northeast and now engulfing the entire spectra of Nigerian society. No region that Is not bedeviled by one agitation or the other in a violent form. So far only the south-south region which was hitherto the hub of violence is somehow not affected by an organized form of uprising. But that can be left to be seen with the ultimatum given by  Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo to the Nigerian gover nment.   From the Boko Haram of the Northeast to bandits (Fulani militia, Unwkown GunMen UGM) in the northwest and north-central to the uprising spearheaded by Sunday Igboho in the southwest and the IPOD of Nnamdi Kanu, Nigeria is in a state of violent orgy perpetuated by an ideological factor and to criminal elements/factor. We have seen little agitation for inclusiveness ignored and now turned violent. We have seen a gradual but consistent metamorphosis of little criminal groups becoming terror groups. Suddenly when a crim...

Labour Versus Elrufai

Image
It is noteworthy that there is an impending showdown between organized labour under the umbrella of the Comrade Ayuba Wabba led  Nigeria Labour Congress and the Governor of Kaduna state Mal. Nasir Elrufai. This will not be the first showdown as some years ago, labour led a protest against the government of Kaduna State over the sacking of workers. The two sides of the divide need to prove a point on this standoff. First is the Executive Governor of Kaduna state who carries himself as a no-nonsense, strong, and courageous leader. This can be seen by the way and manner he carries his Urban Renewal policy. Those served with notice of demolition were not spared on the expiration of the notice. Whatever he declares he declares with finality and never publically back down. Recently, he publically declared that he will not negotiate with bandits or pay ransom. He has stayed that way despite the deliberate escalation of kidnapping in the state and the outcry from the fallout of...

Nigeria's Rising Cost of Living and Security Challenge

Nigerians are facing lots of challenges ranging from poor electricity supply to unemployment. With no social safety nets in place and couple with rising insecurity in the country, business are crumbling down or wrapping up. Economic activities are gradually going down in most States of the North East and North West. The South East is gradually becoming a hot zone of crisis with constant escalation. All this put together makes being a Nigerian in Nigeria tough and rough.  Let me put it more succinctly. The main economic activities of the North is agriculture. With constant banditry and kidnapping, most famers have not been able to go to farms out of fear. So it is a reduction in income to some communities. Reduce agricultural activity means reduction in food supply and ultimately food security is not guaranteed. Hunger and starvation are almost eminent when one consider the ripple effect of the actions of banditry, kidnappings and couple with cattle rustling. Ultimately prices of fo...
